Punjab Covid count moves to 4,769, deaths at 120

Seven more people died of coronavirus in Punjab on Thursday, taking the toll to 120, while 142 fresh cases pushed its tally to 4,769, according to a medical bulletin. Sangrur and Amritsar recorded two fatalities each, and Moga, Tarn Taran and Ludhiana one each, it said.
Of the 142 fresh cases, 31 were reported in Amritsar, followed by 25 in Jalandhar, 21 in Sangrur, 19 in Ludhiana, nine in Muktsar, eight in Patiala, six each in Moga and Kapurthala, four each in Mohali and Ferozepur, two each in Gurdaspur and Fazilka, and one each in Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Faridkot, Rupnagar and Mansa, it said.
Fifteen of the new patients had a travel history to other states. According to the bulletin, 93 coronavirus patients were discharged from various hospitals after they recovered from the infection. A total of 3,192 people have been cured of the disease so far, it said. The state now has 1,457 active cases, the bulletin said. Amritsar continued to top the state's COVID-19 tally with 838 cases, followed by 668 in Jalandhar, 663 in Ludhiana, 322 in Sangrur, 243 in Patiala, 228 in Mohali and 198 in Gurdaspur.
Pathankot has 195 cases, Tarn Taran 187, Hoshiarpur 166, SBS Nagar 126, Muktsar 125, Fatehgarh Sahib and Faridkot 101 each, Rupnagar 95, Moga 92, Ferozepur 86, Bathinda 85, Kapurthala 83, Fazilka 77, Barnala 46 and Mansa 44, according to the bulletin.
Five patients are critical and on ventilator support, while 25 are on oxygen support, it said. A total of 2,69,037 samples have been taken for testing so far, the bulletin said.
Ten more coronavirus deaths were reported from Haryana on Thursday, eight of these from the three worst-hit districts falling in the National Capital Region, while the total number of cases in the state rose to 12,463 with 453 fresh infections.Four deaths were reported from Sonipat, three from Faridabad and one from Gurgaon. COVID-19 fatalities in Haryana now stand at 198.
A record spike in COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on Thursday triggered the biggest single-day jump of close to 17,000 infections in the country even as Maharashtra decided to undertake antigen and rapid antibody tests for the disease in the worst hit state. According to the Union Health ministry data, COVID-19 cases rose by the highest-ever number of 16,922 to reach 4,73,105, while the death toll climbed to 14,894 with 418 new fatalities. This was the sixth consecutive day when coronavirus cases increased by more than 14,000.
Consequently, India has added 92,573 cases since June 20, and over 2.82 lakh this month alone since June 1. However, the recovery rate has improved to 57.43 per cent, according to the Health ministry. It also said there are 33.39 COVID-19 cases in India for every one lakh population, as against the global average of 114.67. Also, the country has 1.06 deaths per lakh population, which is amongst the lowest in the world and the global average is 6.24, it added. A central team led by Joint Secretary in the Health Ministry Lav Agarwal will visit Gujarat, Maharashtra and Telangana between June 26 and 29 to coordinate with the state officials in strengthening COVID-19 management efforts in those areas.
According to officials, the team will also review the measures undertaken by the states for containment of COVID-19. Maharashtra recorded the highest daily jump of 4,841 new cases and the tally rose to 1,47,741, a state health official said. Gujarat was in the fourth position with a tally of 28,943 while Telangana reported 10,331 cases, according to health ministry data. Twelve states have reported over 10,000 cases.
