Central Bank of India marked the 144th birth anniversary of its illustrious founder, Sir Sorabji Pochkhanawala, on Thursday, celebrating the legacy of a visionary who laid the foundation of India's first Swadeshi bank in 1911.

Paying tribute to the pioneering spirit of Sir Pochkhanawala, the bank acknowledged his role in establishing a truly Indian-owned banking institution that has, for over a century, stood at the forefront of financial inclusion and innovation.

Highlighting key milestones in its journey, the Bank recalled several historic firsts:

In 1921, it introduced the Home Saving Safe Scheme;

In 1924, it set up the first Ladies' Department in Indian banking;

In 1980, it became the first Indian bank to issue a Credit Card.

Carrying forward this legacy, the Central Bank of India continues to champion digital transformation and inclusive growth, with special focus on women-centric initiatives such as Cent Queen and Cent Griha Laxmi.

Speaking on the occasion, Sh. Arvind Kumar, Zonal Head, Chandigarh Zone, said, "Sir Pochkhanawala's vision continues to guide us. On this Founder's Day, we reaffirm our commitment to serve every Indian with trust, innovation, and inclusivity."

At present, the bank operates through 4,545 branches, 4,085 ATMs, and 12,260 Business Correspondent (BC) Points across the country.

True to its tagline, "Central To You Since 1911," the Central Bank of India remains a pillar of Indian banking heritage and continues to shape the financial future of the nation.
