Trinamool seeks re-investigation into death of teenager on Goa beach

Trinamool

Panaji, Nov 2 : The Trinamool Congress on Tuesday urged the Goa State Commission for Women to direct the police to re-investigate the mysterious death of a 19-year-old girl who was found dead at the popular Calangute beach in August this year. A delegation of Trinamool leaders also submitted a memorandum to the Commission. "The main demand is for the case to be re-investigated. If there is no progress in the Siddhi Naik case, the Goa Trinamool will approach the Judicial Magistrate next," party leader Swati Kerkar told reporters. Trinamool leaders have also raised the issue of women's safety in the state in wake of a series of murders and sexual assaults reported over the last two months. "It is high time we prioritise the safety of women in Goa. There should be CCTV cameras and a patrolling unit on beaches to effectively check criminal activities," the memorandum to the Commission said. Last month, a delegation of Trinamool leaders including party MP Mahua Moitra and Babul Supriyo met the family of Siddhi Naik and assured that the issue of the shoddy police probe would be raised in Parliament. The 19-year-old girl, a resident of Nachinola village in North Goa, was missing since the morning of August 12 and a missing complaint was filed by her father with the Calangute police station. The body was found, in a partially clothed state, on the following day at Calangute beach. A post mortem has ruled out any sexual assault and murder, while identifying the cause of death as drowning. Siddhi's father, Santosh, has however demanded that the case should be registered and investigated as a murder, raising red flags about the police investigation. /IANS
